The 5 Most Popular Landscaping Improvements Trends in 2023

American lawns and landscapes are easily among the greatest in the world.

So what are the latest most popular trending landscaping improvements?

Today we will dive into the latest trending landscape designs, and evaluate which improvements are the most popular and why.

Below you will find the top 7 landscaping trends of 2023.

Including expert opinions and in-depth research.

You will find EVERYTHING you need to know about America's most popular lawn and landscape designs for 2023.

Enough chit-chat, let's dive right in!

Trend #1: Native Plants and Pollinators

“People are integrating native plants in their yards in a few different ways…Some are maintaining traditional landscaping features like ground coverage and flower beds while swapping in more environmentally friendly species. Others are looking to make a complete change to their property by seeding prairie grasses and similar species instead of turf grasses.” -  Tom Nolan, Founder AllStar Home

Hands down one of the most popular 2023 landscape improvements Americans are making is the addition of native plants and pollinators.

Why?

Well, it's simple. Native animals including beneficial insects, and local wildlife love them.

And as you may know, pollinators are crucial to our existence. Without them, we wouldn't have food!

Installing native plants is a great way to do your part to help the local ecosystem, and gives your landscape a practical function beyond the gorgeous aesthetic design.

Trend #2: Rewilding

“In the panorama of 2023's landscaping landscape, a rather unique trend has gracefully emerged: rewilding. It's an art, a philosophy, and a commitment. Instead of taming and molding nature to fit into our boxed views, rewilding emphasizes letting nature express itself, guiding us to design spaces that are wild at heart, even in the midst of urban sprawl. Rewilding aims to recreate a raw, organic feel of an ecosystem in today's landscapes.” -Ash Read Indoor Plants

If you want to go one step further than adding native plants, many American homeowners are turning to total rewilding.

While you may not be able to pull off this trend in an HOA, rewilding is great for homeowners with plenty of lawn that want to return some of it back to nature. There are two methods to accomplish this end.

Method One: Natural Rewilding

This is the easiest method, which not only reduces the amount of work you will have to do in the lawn but also requires little to no input on your end. Simply let nature take its course and see what springs forth.

To be honest, this method can be a bit hit or miss. It really depends on which plants 'volunteer’ themselves in your yard. In most areas, you may want to selectively weed out certain plant species.

Method Two: Planned Rewilding

This is my favorite method. While you can still let some volunteers come into your rewilding space, it's often best to bring in some native plants either by planting seeds or getting native perennials from your local nursery.

And, if you live in a wooded area, you can even transplant some trees into your new native space. Without a doubt, rewilding is a great landscaping improvement, because it doesn't have to cost much to cultivate an amazing space!

Trend #3: Drought Resistant Landscape

“One of the most popular trends in landscape improvement this year is low-water landscaping. Low-water landscaping involves selecting plants that require less water and minimizing irrigation needs. It also includes using mulches, composts, and other soil amendments to improve moisture retention.” -Patrick Grayson, Founder & CEO of Paramount Property Buyers https://paramountprop.com

It’s no secret, water shortages are a growing issue in many American cities.

Not only do water shortages pose growing challenges to establishing a healthy lawn and landscape, but they are also an ever-growing restriction we are faced with.

As a result drought tolerant and resistant landscapes are a top trend in the American landscape in 2023.

Fortunately, you can establish a drought-tolerant landscape easily by:

  • Utilizing drought-tolerant plants

  • Planting shade trees

  • Minimizing the size of your lawn

  • Xeriscaping

Trend #4: Backyard Patio and Firepit

“The most popular improvement is a patio and firepit. This improvement is so popular because it provides a space to entertain outside. This provides an immediate value to the consumer and gives their home more usable space. This is not quite as substantial of a project as the full outdoor kitchen with the patio, making it a little more obtainable in the $10,000-$20,000 range depending on size and access. A growing trend I am seeing is towards more modern paver and wall block materials, away from the natural stone.” -Quinten O'dea, the owner of Q&A Landscaping

Make no doubt about it, some of the greatest experiences I had growing up centered around hanging out with my family in the backyard, and one of my favorite things growing up was those nights by the fire.

Backyard patios with a firepit are a great way to build memories with friends and family, all while getting the most out of your backyard and best of all enjoying nature!

So it’s no wonder that one of the growing trends we are seeing in 2023 is the growing demand for outdoor fire pits. Furthermore, firepits offer a 67% return on investment according to research

Trend #5: Vegetable Gardens

SOURCING QUOTE

Finally, my personal favorite. The good old-fashioned vegetable garden!

In my opinion, nothing screams the great American lawn like a vegetable garden. In 2023, more Americans are picking up gardening and it’s leading to a trend that I believe will continue to grow into the future.

Think about it, what better use of your lawn could you make than creating a space where you can grow your own food, and connect with family and nature?

2023 Landscaping Trends At The End of The Day

At the end of the day, lawn care and landscaping trends will continue to evolve. While some trends such as fire pits and patios will reflect those of the past, others such as drought-tolerant landscapes will reflect the changing demands of a growing world.

However, one thing that won’t change is America’s love for their lawns and landscapes. No doubt about it, the American lawn is here to stay. And the work we put into our yards will last for decades to come.

So I have one question for you, what will your landscape tell future generations?
