The area was inhabited by the Attakapas Native Americans at the time of the first European encounter. Soon after the first encounter, French colonists founded the first European settlement in Lafayette. The city was named Petit Manchac.
The city was originally just a trading post along the Vermilion River. In the mid-to-late eighteenth century numerous Acadian refugees settled in this area. The Acadians settled here after being expelled from Canada after Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years' War. Here the Acadian people intermarried with other settlers and formed what became known as Cajun culture. The Cajun tradition maintained use of the French language and strict adherence to the Roman Catholic Church.
Jean Mouton, was an Acadian settler who came during this emigration. He donated land to the Catholic church for construction of a small Catholic chapel at this site. Then in the year 1824 this area was selected for the Lafayette Parish seat and was named Vermilionville. This name came for its location on the river. It wasn't until 1836 the Louisiana Legislature approved its incorporation.
