Gary had the highest percentage of residents of African descent among American cities with a population of 100,000 or higher, but the city’s population has fallen below six digits.
The South Shore Line commuter rail system travels through Gary, with four stops in the city. The rail service travels to Chicago with stops at the Millennium Station and McCormick Place. The line also goes east to South Bend, stopping at the South Bend International Airport.
The Gary SouthShore RailCats baseball team has been playing at U.S. Steel Yard since 2001. The team plays in the American Association, an independent league with no affiliate to any major league baseball clubs.
The Gary Community School Corporation operates most of the public schools in the city. The Lake Ridge Schools Corporation also operates some schools in Gary.
