Chattanooga TN is a city on the southeastern end of Tennessee. The city is located along the Tennessee River and is on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
The Tennessee Aquarium is in Chattanooga. The public aquarium is home to nearly 800 species of marine life.
Volkswagen is one of the largest employers in Chattanooga. The German car company operates an assembly plant in the city. The plant makes the Passat and Atlas vehicles from Volkswagen.
McKee Foods Corporation is also in the Chattanooga area, specifically in the suburb of Collegedale. The company is best known for making Little Debbie brand snack cakes.
The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum highlights the railroad-influenced history of Chattanooga. The museum is home to many steam locomotives, many of which date back to the early twentieth century.
The Hamilton County Schools district operates the public schools in the region. The Siskin Children’s Institute for special education is also in the city. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is home to the second-largest campus in the University of Tennessee system, with about 11,000 students attended classes here.
The city is also home to one of the country’s oldest professional baseball teams. The Chattanooga Lookouts minor league team has been competing in various forms since 1885.
Chattanooga is about 120 miles northwest of Atlanta, 110 miles southwest of Knoxville and 130 miles southeast of Nashville. The city is served by major highways like I-24, I-59, and I-75. Those three highways respectively link people to Nashville, Birmingham, and Atlanta.
Chattanooga has a population of about 170,000. The metropolitan area features a little more than half a million people.
The city is directly on the western end of the Eastern Time Zone. The city is in Hamilton County, the western-most county in the state that operates on Eastern Time.
Chattanooga TN was formed in 1839 and quickly grew thanks to railroad services based out of the area. During the Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant organized troops in the city after the Battle of Chickamauga. Various dams were built in the area in the 1930s as a part of the Tennessee Valley Authority Program.
