About Peoria Arizona
Peoria is a city in Arizona, United States.

Peoria lies in two counties in Arizona, the first being in Maricopa County, and the second being in Yavapai County. There is only a small portion of the city that lies in Yavapai County, however, less than a square mile. The city is one of the smaller suburbs of Phoenix, one of the biggest and most populous areas of Arizona. According to the Census Bureau (the official count of the population throughout the United States), the population of Peoria was close to 154 thousand people in 2010. In the official count of Arizona statistics, Peoria is currently the sixth-largest city in terms of land area, the ninth-largest for the population. The city was named after the city of the same name in Illinois, for no other reason other than the name sounded cool. In fact, the word Peoria is a bastardization of the Illini word for prairie fire.
The Illini people were a group of Native Americans who lived in the area but were erased from history during the European invasion. The city of Peoria is the home of several spring training camps for several Major League Baseball teams including the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and a few others that rotate their camps throughout the years. They all attend their spring training camps at the Peoria Sports Complex. The city ranked in the top fifty of the Top 100 Places to Live. In terms of the rest of the state, the city of Peoria lies in the southwestern central part of the state, and in terms of the county, it is in the northern portion of the county. The city sits in the Salt River Valley and extends all the way to the foothills of the mountains. William John Murphy was a gentleman and businessman who worked on the Arizona Canal was one of the people at the forefront for leading settlers to live in the area. Because many of them were from Illinois, they decided to name the city with the same name, thus the name Peoria was established early in the nineteenth century.
